' Sculptural artwork and installations made from materials in functional transition—between construction, residue, and refusal.'
Iris de Vries creates sculptural works with materials that occupy a paradoxical position between usefulness and waste. She investigates the hidden systems that shape contemporary patterns of consumption, abundance, and disposal. Although these materials often remain recyclable or functional, they are frequently discarded due to economic, logistical, or regulatory factors.
Through processes of transformation and recontextualization, De Vries explores how discarded matter can acquire an almost biological or ecological presence. Her sculptures reveal unexpected forms of vitality within materials that have been stripped of their original purpose. Rather than offering a moral judgment, her work invites a closer examination of the normalized structures and habits that underpin everyday life. By combining tactile accessibility with a strong visual presence, she creates space for reflection on the systems we inhabit—both consciously and unconsciously.
